Photo by Bob Stone, Carmel Who We Are The Cypressaires is one of over 800 chapters in the United States and Canada that make up SPEBSQSA, the Barbershop Harmony Society. We have been singing the "old songs" since the chapter was formed in 1956. We meet weekly to learn new songs, rehearse old ones, prepare for special performances and have fun! Our current membership is 30 men from age 35 to 92. Since 2001, the chorus has been directed by accomplished musician, Kristen Thompson. She has a B.A. in Percussion Performance and a M.A. in Choral Conducting. She has been on the music faculties of both public and private schools in San Jose, Santa Cruz, Los Gatos and Monterey. She is a certified Barbershop Chorus director and a certified Orff-Schulwerk specialist. In addition to directing the Cypressaires, Kristen also directs the Bay Belles, Monterey Peninsula's Women's Barbershop chorus. Under Kristen's energetic direction, the Cypressaires and their quartets entertain frequently at convalescent hospitals, retirement communities, service clubs, conventions, group picnics and private parties. Our quartets deliver over 100 singing valentines every February. The Cypressaires culminate their year's work in an annual show in which out-of-town talent is added to create a Barbershop Harmony Production. As an additional challenge, the chorus and quartets compete in regional contests sponsored by the Barbershop Harmony Society. All men, young and old, who like to sing are encouraged to visit our meetings at the York School Music Room every Tuesday from 7:15pm to 9:45pm. If you can carry a tune, we'll help you with the rest. For further information regarding membership or booking a performance, call Bryan Epps at (831) 659 2526, or email us at Cypressaires@aol.com
